How to choose a face wash

Oily skin

Oily skin does well with a gel or foaming wash labelled oil-free. These rinse clean and leave no film. Washing more than twice a day can leave skin tight and uncomfortable. An exfoliating daily wash suits oily skin; if it stings, use it every other day.

Dry and sensitive skin

Dry skin needs a cream cleanser or a mild soap-free wash that does not leave the face feeling tight. Sensitive skin is usually happier with a fragrance-free wash and a short ingredient list. Try a new face wash on a small patch along the jaw for a few days before using it all over.

Combination skin

Combination skin is oily on the forehead, nose and chin and normal or dry on the cheeks. A gentle gel wash suits most people with this skin type. If your cheeks feel tight after washing, switch to a milder formula or use a cream wash in the morning.

Gel, foam, cream or bar

Gel washes are clear and light. Foam washes feel airy and rinse quickly. Cream washes are richer and suit dry skin. A facial bar is a soap made for the face; choose one sold for facial skin, since body soap can feel harsh.

How often to wash your face

Twice a day is enough for most people: once in the morning and once at night to clear makeup, sunscreen and the day’s dust. Wash again after heavy sweating. Use lukewarm water, massage for about 30 seconds, pat dry with a clean towel and follow with a moisturiser. A face wash keeps skin clean and fresh; it does not change skin tone.
