One of the most common misunderstandings is that more strength means more control and that applying super strong hair styling products would allow you to get your ideal hairstyle. The truth is that it is never the case. Using hair gel or wax that is not suitable for your hair type will make your hair look unnatural, oily, too shiny, rock hard stiffness, and washing it out is a pain. The list of problems that your hair will face is never-ending if you are not careful enough while choosing a hair product.
An important thing to note here is that every hairstyle requires a different product. You have to employ a trial and fail technique to get to the right product, but if you know what you are looking for, you can narrow down the list. Wrong products will give you consecutive bad hair days regardless of your haircut or how skilled your stylist or barber is.
To help you figure out what you should try next, you need to know the differences between hair gel and wax. It may seem that they serve the same purpose that is styling hair, but there is a lot more to it.
Wax
Picking the right hair wax can be a bit challenging especially if you don’t check the ingredients list. Hair wax for styling is usually made with Beeswax and Lanolin wax.
Wax gives the best results for oily to normal hair with medium to short length. It doesn’t last for a long time, but it is easy to reapply. With wax, you can fix or get a new hairstyle with wax even after working out.
Wax works best when applied to dry hair. Using it on wet hair doesn’t give good results. It doesn’t harden or stiffen your hair at all. It is somewhat thicker than gel, it doesn’t make your hair sticky or grimy to the touch. It is smooth, gives a more matte and less shiny look. Wax is a great product if you want to add more thickness and texture to your hair. For flyaways (the odd ends that stick up) and frizz, the right wax is your best solution.
If you compare wax with gel, wax gives your finer control, while gel sticks your hair together.
Gel
Hair gel is the first hair styling product for most men but it by no means means that it belongs at the bottom of the barrel. When it comes to gel, it’s all about moderation. Gel offers the strongest hold and gives you rock-solid hair. It is stronger than wax or pomade, but it doesn’t give a natural look like other styling products.
It gives your hair a wet, shiny look for the entire day. Restyling hair is a problem as you will end up combing through stuck hair strands, making it a bit messy. You will have to wash the product out first if you want to restyle your hair.
Though gel provides the max hold, you need to be careful if you have finer hair and pick a milder gel.
