Matte lipstick or lip gloss

Matte lipstick gives flat, rich colour with no shine and usually lasts longer before it needs a touch-up. It can feel dry on chapped lips. Lip gloss gives a glossy, wet look and feels lighter, but it wears off faster after eating or drinking. A matte lip gloss sits in between: it goes on as a liquid and dries down to a soft matte finish.

Picking a shade

Look at the veins on your inner wrist. Greenish veins suggest a warm undertone, which suits brick reds, corals and warm browns. Bluish veins suggest a cool undertone, which suits berry, plum and blue-based reds. Nudes look natural when they are one or two shades deeper than your own lips. Screen colours vary, so read the shade name as well as looking at the photo.

Making matte colour last

Wipe dry skin off the lips with a soft damp cloth, then put on a thin layer of lip balm and blot it after a minute. Outline the lips with a liner close to your lipstick shade, fill in, and let the colour set before pressing your lips together. At night, wipe matte formulas off with micellar water or a little oil.
