Masks are quite popular among skincare enthusiasts and beauty bloggers. There are various types of masks; clay masks, peel-off masks, hydrating masks, and sheet masks. But are these masks actually effective, or are they just a passing beauty trend? The truth is that if you pick the mask that is designed for your skin type, it will detox, exfoliate, hydrate, and give your skin a healthy glow. Here are several tips on how to choose and use masks and peels for your unique skin type.
Consider Your Skin Type
Masks usually absorb excess oil from the skin, making them the best product for those who have oily and acne-prone skin. These masks make the skin look firm by reducing pore size, which is also good for mature skin. However, for those with sensitive skin, rosacea, and active acne, it is recommended that you consult your dermatologist about it if you wish to use it as it might irritate your skin further.
Ingredients
Masks don’t have one-size-fits-all. For acne-prone, oily skin, you might want to look for masks with ingredients like charcoal, tea tree, glycolic acid, clay, or salicylic acid if you want the best results. For those with normal to dry skin type, look for the peel-off mask containing hydrating ingredients such as glycerine, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera gel to improve hydration.
Including It in the Nighttime Skincare Routine
Many people believe that you can use masks at any time of the day, which, however, is not correct. Masks and peels gently exfoliate your skin and remove dirt, grime, blackheads, and some facial hair as well. If you use a peel-off mask during the day, your skin will be exposed to harsh sun rays that can have a detrimental effect on your skin. Therefore, it is better that you put the mask on at night after cleansing your face and then follow it up with your night cream or serum.
Avoid Overdoing it
You might be tempted to get that squeaky clean skin every day, but it might not be a good idea. You should not use it more than three times a week, especially if you have clogged pores and oily skin. For oily skin, once a week is enough.
Different Types of Masks and Peels:
Clay Masks
Clay masks work perfectly for a weekly skin detox. They contain mud or clay that are essentially cleansing and purifying in nature. They are great for deep cleansing, acne combat, oil control, cooling the skin, and repairing sun damage. It may not be suitable for dry skin type.
Peel-Off Masks
These masks work instantly and remove dead skin cells and impurities from the uppermost layer of the skin while nourishing it. It works as a mild exfoliant, and it is easy and quick to use.
Hydrating Masks
These masks have a gel or cream-like texture, and they are ideal for replenishing dehydrated and dry skin, removing dryness. However, it is not ideal for oily skin or for removing impurities.
Sheet Masks
Sheet masks are face-shaped fabrics that have a nutrition-packed solution on them. These nutrients seep into the skin and rejuvenate your skin. It doesn’t need to be wiped off or washed off. You simply have to put it on the skin and take it off after half an hour.
